Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Image
Phnom Penh , the capital city of Cambodia, is also the city that has the largest population. The city is striving towards economic development with much diversity from the beauty of the Royal Palace (Caption 1), bustling marketplaces (Captions 3, 5-9), sites of poverty (Captions 14 & 15), to saffrons of monks around the city (even found in malls playing with their cell phones).  It was one known as the "Pearl of Asia", however it later was tarnished from war, revolution, and independence (Caption 2). Since then, the city has risen to economic development, with a bustling bars, cafes, and food stalls. Getting Phnom Penh isn't difficult, the easiest options are hailing for a tuk tuk or hire a scooter. The city offers much to see if you want to get around. Key places to visit: Royal Palace Independence Monument Central Market Russian Market Chong Koh Silk Village (its a market place and village, requires a boat to get across the Mekong River) Tuol Sleng Geno

Ta Prom in Angkor, Cambodia

Image
Ta Prohm is one of the many temples in Angkor, Cambodia, located about 1 km east of Angkor Thom. It is said to be built during the late 12th or early 13th centuries but today UNESCO had included Ta Prohm on the World Heritage List. One of the most fascinating and notable landmarks of the Ta Prohm are the very old giant trees overgrown on the buildings as pictured below. To visit the Ta Prohm you can hire a driver to take your there. Instagram: @travellerswill Instagram: @travellerswill Instagram: @travellerswill

Pura Lempuyang (or Lempuyang Temple), Karangasem, Eastern Bali

Image
One of the most amazing eye catching photos you may have seen so many tourists take of Bali are the entrance gates into the Lempuyang Temple (See Caption 1 ). The Pura Lempuyang, Pura meaning Temple, is a sacred temple with shrines located in eastern Bali. Literally there are at least thousand steps to get the top with stunning views of the landscape of Bali. The temple is generally not very crowded, as the majority of visitors to Bali stay around the western parts of the island (eg. Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu). The eastern parts of Bali generally attract the more adventurous types who wish to visit less populated areas with far fewer nightlife such as bars and nightclubs. A group of friends and I did a road trip to the eastern parts of Bali and the Pura Lempuyang was definitely a place worth visiting. Entrance cost was just a generous donation for the borrowing a sarong (skirt) to cover your legs before entering the temple (general donations amount around 10,000 to 20,000 rupiah o

Corrupt Police in Bali

Image
If you pulled over for riding a scooter in Bali, randomly or at police check points, they will 99% of the time ask you for your driver’s license. I got pulled over 3 times, and didn’t have an international driver’s license. But luckily, I got away with it 3 times in a row. I happen negotiate my way around it. In one instance, my friend who was riding on another bike on the same journey with me got unlucky and didn’t have an international license too. He got booked for a 500,000 rupiah fine (equivalent to $40 USD) and they issue you an international drivers licence (see below and it looks very legitimate) on the spot. Best advice go get an international driver's license from the country you reside and you can use it in other countries too. Lots of people ask me: WHERE IS THE BEST AREA TO STAY IN BALI?

Image
Bali is one big island right? Kinda! Bali is in fact a province and the main island called Bali island as well. There are some smaller neighbouring islands, which mainly include the 3 bigger islands  Nusa Penida , Nusa Lembongan , and Nusa Ceningan. The advantage about main island of Bali is every location differs in atmosphere vastly and depending on what your preference is, you could stay in one area more than others. The 5 main areas where most tourists love visiting and stay at are: Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, and Nusa Dua. Depending on how long your trip in Bali will be, you can work your way around it to get the most enjoyable time in Bali. For example, if you are visiting Bali for a short trip (several days) just to relax, then you would prefer to stay in one location. If you plan to stay for longer, then its preferable to visit all the main areas and others if you have time. Here are the 5 main areas where most people stay and what the main atmosphere there is: K

Best way to get from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh in Cambodia

The most cost effective way to get to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap is by coach (bus), however the trip by road takes approx. 5 and a half hours, compared with flying which takes about 1 hour. You must also consider if you were to fly would be the time to take to get to the airport so all up should be about 2 hours (about 30 minutes each way to the respective airports, not taking into account time going through airport security checks). Costs (prices in 2017): Coach: $15 USD for 5.5 hours Plane: ~$34 USD for around 2 hours The coach, I took was quite good using the Giant ibis Transport Company. I paid for the ticket one day before I was planning to depart Siem Reap at my hotel. A transport mini-bus will pick you with your luggage up in the morning (designated time) at your hotel and take you to the Giant ibis Bus Terminal in Siem Reap where more people join from other hotels. A bigger coach departs the terminal once everyone has arrived. The service provided by the company is

Tanah Lot Temple, Bali (12.5km NW of Canggu Beach by road)

Image
Tanah Lot is one of the amazing Balinese rock formation islands that pinches out to sea but still connects (bridge-like sandstone) to the Balinese mainland. Instagram: @travellerswill What the best possible way to get there? I hired a scooter for 60,000 rupiah for 24 hours in Kuta and rode up there using Google Maps on my phone. It takes about 22.5 kilometres or about 1 hour to get there. Getting a car, taxi, or coach are an alternative but the traffic in Bali is quite troublesome given their roads are very narrow and everyone is going there at the same time, the hardest part is when everyone is leaving at the same time. On my scooter I saw everyone in vehicles got quite frustrated stuck in traffic and not moving. Entry ticket is 60,000 rupiah and 2,000 rupiah for parking a scooter (I can't remember what price for parking a car was). Advantages Scooter: quicker to get there and avoid heavy traffic 4 wheeled vehicle: better to be in one when wet weather, roads in
